Integrity in Relationships

Relationships are vital to human existence – and yet they are often filled with pain and misery. World renowned relationship expert, Dr. Barbara DeAngelis accepted Dr. Guy Riekeman’s invitation to provide her transformative wisdom in a much more intimate setting than her usual audience – and now TCL and LIFE Talks share the experience with you.

Integrity in Relationships
It’s Not a Choice; It’s Imperative

By Guy F. Riekeman on behalf of Life University

The 1977 Woody Allen film, Annie Hall, opens with Woody telling the following joke:

“There’s an old joke – um… two elderly women are at a Catskill mountain resort, and one of ‘em says, ‘Boy, the food at this place is really terrible.’ The other one says, ‘Yeah, I know; and such small portions.’”

Woody reminds us this is how we look at relationships; while full of pain and misery, they’re over too quickly.

Why are we driven to seek out relationships when we keep putting our finger on the hot burner and experiencing pain? The positive psychologists at Life U will tell you we humans literally cannot survive without human relationships. We are one of only two classes that require relationships for our survival and well being, birds and mammals. Further, we can’t develop properly without healthy relationships. So, what is healthy relationship and how do we create them when our role models are so often dysfunctional?

Enter, Barbara De Angelis. I sat in Barbara’s seminar some 35 years ago. I had read her best selling books, but it wasn’t just the information, it was the experiences she took us through that changed my life. I also recall, vividly, the day she was at my ranch in Colorado with her husband and my friend, Jeffrey, and had a major breakthrough, which she captured in one of her books. Like all of us in relationships, she was still learning, too. And after attending her sessions at LIFE Talks, it’s clear she still is learning – and remains a better guide for the rest of us than ever before.
